Special Agent in Charge Michael Anderson of the New Orleans Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today that Derrick Demond Mitchell, 24, was arrested in Stockton, California on Thursday, September 24, 2015, by the Safe Streets Task Force.

Derrick Demond Mitchell, a convicted felon, was wanted for his alleged involvement in the murder of a male acquaintance in Louisiana. On December 20, 2012, Mitchell is alleged to have forcefully entered the victim’s Abbeville, Louisiana residence and proceeded to shoot him several times in the head.

As a result of an Abbeville Police Department investigation, Mitchell was charged with murder, felon in possession of a firearm, receipt of stolen property, and robbery by the 15th Judicial District Court, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, and a state warrant was issued for his arrest on August 27, 2014. A federal arrest warrant was issued by the United States District Court, Western District of Louisiana, on July 16, 2015, after Mitchell was charged federally with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Mitchell is currently in custody in California and will return to Louisiana to stand trial for murder. The case is being prosecuted by the 15th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

While Mitchell was on the run, the FBI Lafayette Resident Agent Office and the USMS – Western District of Louisiana conducted a lengthy investigation in an attempt to locate and apprehend Derrick Mitchell. SAC Anderson thanks the Stockton Safe Streets Task Force, comprised of FBI agents from the Sacramento Field Office, Stockton Police Department, and California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for assisting with the location and Stockton Police Department officers for the arrest of armed and dangerous federal fugitive Derrick Demond Mitchell.
