New Orleans Man Pleads Guilty to Violating Federal Gun Laws

NEW ORLEANS, LA—MARK BROOKS, age 22, a resident of New Orleans, pled guilty today in federal court before U.S. District Judge Martin L.C. Feldman to two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to the factual basis, BROOKS admitted that on January 11, 2009, he was in possession of a unknown make and model firearm on January 11, 2009. In addition, on February 24, 2009, during an investigation of a shooting that took place during a Mardi Gras parade, BROOKS was arrested and had in his possession a 9mm handgun. BROOKS was previously convicted of possession of crack cocaine on February 22, 2008 in Orleans Parish.
BROOKS faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a $250,000 as to each count. Sentencing has been scheduled for January 19, 2011.
This case was investigated by special agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and the New Orleans Police Department. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Maurice E. Landrieu, Jr.
