James H. Moran Middle School Wins the February 2013 Stingray Category Award in the National FBI-SOS Internet Challenge

James H. Moran Middle School has earned the FBI-SOS (Safe Online Surfing) Internet Challenge’s National Award for February 2013 in the Stingray category. The James H. Moran Middle School students posted the best scores in the country amongst the Stingray category to claim the highly coveted national award and become the first Connecticut school to be so recognized.
As FBI-SOS Internet Challenge National Champions for February 2013, the students at James H. Moran Middle School will receive the FBI-SOS National Trophy and a visit from the FBI. The official award ceremony will take place on Monday, June 24, 2013, at James H. Moran Middle School at 142 Hope Hill Road in Wallingford, Connecticut, 06492.
“I am so proud of the effort put into this national competition by the Moran Middle School students,” stated Special Agent in Charge Kimberly K. Mertz of the New Haven Division of the FBI. “The Internet is a powerful tool that can be used to foster and fulfill a student’s unrelenting thirst for knowledge, but it can also present potential pitfalls and dangers that, quite frankly, all Internet users should be educated about. Congratulations on a well-deserved award.”
Under the guidance of Ms. Jacqueline Nelson, the students produced the top cumulative results on the FBI-SOS Internet Challenge post-quiz. The FBI-SOS is an Internet safety program developed and administered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The monthly program, which runs each school year from September through May, is a free educational program that delivers critical Internet safety information in a fun, competitive format to students in grades three through eight. The program is open to public and private schools and is designed to meet state and federal Internet safety mandates. The goal of the program is to provide students with knowledge about how to avoid dangerous situations on the Internet, specifically Internet predators. Each month students from registered schools learn about Internet safety as they participate in online games and activities. Upon completion, the students take an online quiz to test their knowledge. At the end of each month, three trophies (one for each school size category) are awarded to the schools with the highest scoring students on the FBI-SOS post-quiz.
