Stamford Man Sentenced to 54 Months in Federal Prison for Engaging in Four-Month Bank Robbery Spree

David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that SPERO MOSCHOS, 29, of Stamford, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Stefan R. Underhill in Bridgeport to 54 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for his role in a four-month bank robbery spree.
According to court documents and statements made in court, between May 2009 and August 2009, MOSCHOS robbed 12 banks in Norwalk, Westport, Stamford, Darien, Wilton, Fairfield, and West Harrison, New York. A Westport bank was victimized twice during the spree. Christopher Davis, 35, of Stamford, participated in eight of the Connecticut bank robberies with MOSCHOS.
The defendants robbed the banks either by passing a threatening note or by making a threatening oral demand for cash. For example, during an attempted robbery of a branch of TD Banknorth in Westport on May 15, 2009, MOSCHOS gave the teller a note stating “Do not push the alarm. I have a bomb. Empty your drawer and no one will get hurt. I am watching your hands!!!” On this occasion, MOSCHOS did not succeed in obtaining any money.
The defendants stole a total of $41,272 during the spree.
On July 6, 2010, MOSCHOS pleaded guilty to five counts of bank robbery and Davis pleaded guilty to four counts.
On November 12, 2010, Judge Underhill sentenced Davis to 151 months of imprisonment based, in part, on DAVIS’ criminal history, which includes prior felony convictions for burglary and second degree robbery.
MOSCHOS and Davis have been incarcerated since August 26, 2009, after they were arrested by the Stamford Police Department.
This matter was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the Stamford, Norwalk, Westport, Darien, Fairfield, and Wilton Police Departments. The State’s Attorney’s Offices for the Judicial Districts of Bridgeport/Fairfield and Stamford/Norwalk assisted in the prosecution of this matter. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Paul Murphy.
