Red Lake Man Sentenced for Assaulting a Woman with a Shovel

U.S. Attorney’s Office November 19, 2012
  • District of Minnesota (612) 664-5600

MINNEAPOLIS—Today in federal court, a 26-year-old Red Lake man was sentenced for assaulting a woman on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. United States District Chief Judge Michael J. Davis sentenced Myron Lee Jones, Jr. to 18 months in federal prison on one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Chief Judge Davis also ordered Jones to pay $219.30 in restitution. Jones, who was indicted on March 20, 2012, pleaded guilty on July 25, 2012.

In his plea agreement, Jones admitted that on August 23, 2009, he swung a shovel during a fight that involved a number of young adults. He struck the female victim in the back of the head, prompting approximately 20 interior and exterior stitches.

This case was the result of an investigation by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Deidre Y. Aanstad.

Because the Red Lake Indian Reservation is a federal-jurisdiction reservation, some of the crimes that occur there are investigated by the FBI in conjunction with the Red Lake Tribal Police Department. Those cases are prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
