Oglala Man Sentenced for Voluntary Manslaughter

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that an Oglala man charged with voluntary manslaughter was sentenced on October 24, 2011, by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken. Beau Dean Black Smith, age 20, was sentenced to 87 months’ imprisonment, three years of supervised release, and a $100 victim assessment.
Black Smith was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 15, 2011. On January 30, 2011, near Oglala, Black Smith stabbed a man in the chest after the two got into a physical fight, killing him. Black Smith pled guilty on July 18, 2011.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe-Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins prosecuted the case.
Black Smith was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
