Fort Yates Woman Sentenced for Arson

BISMARCK, ND—United States Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon announced that on March 21, 2011, Rebecca A. Marshall, 32, of Fort Yates, North Dakota, was sentenced before United States District Court Judge Daniel L. Hovland on a charge of arson. Marshall pleaded guilty to the charge on October 19, 2010.
Judge Hovland sentenced Marshall to 18 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. Marshall was ordered to pay restitution of $69,652.62 and a special assessment of $100 to the Crime Victim’s Fund.
On November 29, 2009, Marshall set fire to a residence she had been renting from the Standing Rock Housing Authority. The Housing Authority was in the process of evicting Marshall from the home. Marshall admitted to investigators that she started the fire by lighting blankets on fire within the home. The home was destroyed by the fire. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Indian Affairs - Standing Rock Agency, Standing Rock Fire Department, and North Dakota Fire Marshal.
Assistant United States Attorney Rick Volk prosecuted the case.
