Belcourt Woman Sentenced for Stabbing Incident

BISMARCK—United States Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon announced that on February 16, 2011, Crystal J. Morin, 31, of Belcourt, North Dakota, was sentenced before United States District Court Judge Daniel L. Hovland on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. Morin pleaded guilty to the charge on May 24, 2010.

Judge Hovland sentenced Morin to two years and three months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. Morin was ordered to pay restitution of $2,406.84 and a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victim’s Fund.

During the early morning hours of April 19, 2009, Morin stabbed the victim in the chest with a knife outside the victim’s residence after a dispute between the victim and another male. The injury the victim sustained was not life threatening.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Indian Affairs - Turtle Mountain Agency, and Belcourt Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Brandi Sasse Russell prosecuted the case.
