Fugitive Romero James Spellmon Arrested for Murder

Donald E. Oswald, Special Agent in Charge of the Minneapolis FBI office, today announces the arrest of Romero James Spellmon, 26, of Bloomington, Minnesota.

Spellmon was arrested pursuant to a state murder warrant which was issued in April, 2011 out of Hennepin County District Court. Spellmon was wanted by law enforcement in connection with the shooting death of Richmond Eric Dunbar on April 10, 2005. Dunbar had been shot just outside a residence located at 3718 Oakland Avenue South in Minneapolis. Dunbar, his two brothers, and another young man had driven to the residence from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota after being told about a barbeque. As they were walking up to the residence, gunshots rang out. Upon arrival at the scene, officers located Dunbar, 29, outside the residence. He had been shot once in the head. Dunbar was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he later died. Dunbar was an active duty U.S. Marine on home leave at the time of his murder.

The FBI’s Minnesota Fugitive Task Force recently developed information which led them to 3536 Aquila Circle in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Once at this residence, task force members encountered Spellmon, who was immediately arrested. Spellmon was booked into the Hennepin County Jail a short time later.

The Minnesota Fugitive Task Force is comprised of investigators from the Minneapolis Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI.

The charges in a state criminal complaint are merely an accusation and defendants are presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
