Eagle Butte Man Sentenced for Shooting

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that an Eagle Butte man charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm was sentenced on August 16, 2011, by United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Ronald Richard Parker, Jr., age 40, was sentenced to 71 months in custody, three years of supervised release, and a $200 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.

The charges arose from an incident at around midnight on March 19, 2011, near the South Main Apartment Complex in Eagle Butte where Parker shot a man in the abdomen with a .22 caliber revolver. The victim survived, but underwent emergency surgery at Rapid City Regional Hospital to repair the gunshot wound. At the time of the assault on March 19, 2011, Parker was a convicted felon and was not authorized to possess a firearm. On May 2, 2011, Parker pled guilty to a superseding information that charged him with assault with a dangerous weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division. Assistant United States Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuted the case.

Parker was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal to begin serving his sentence.
