Redby Man Sentenced for Assault

U.S. Attorney’s Office March 12, 2010
  • District of Minnesota (612) 664-5600

A 31-year-old Redby man was sentenced today in federal court for assaulting another man without cause on September 2, 2009. In Duluth, United States District Court Chief Judge Michael J. Davis sentenced Roy Randolf White, Sr., to 57 months in prison on one count of aggravated assault. White was indicted on December 9, 2009, and pled guilty on January 28, 2010. No plea agreement was filed.

Court records indicate that White assaulted his victim with a dangerous weapon by repeatedly kicking him. According to a Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit, Red Lake tribal police were called to a residence on the Red Lake Indian Reservation on September 2, 2009. When they arrived, they found the 35-year-old victim lying on a cement porch in a pool of blood. Witnesses reported that White had kicked the victim numerous times in addition to repeatedly punching him.

As a result of the assault, the victim suffered a broken jaw and multiple facial fractures. He underwent surgery at the Hennepin County Medical Center. Two plates were inserted in his head to repair his face, and he had to be intubated for assistance in breathing.

After the assault, White fled but was located and apprehended by authorities while he attempted to hide in the back of his vehicle. Witnesses told police White was upset with the victim because the victim supposedly had dated one of White’s former girlfriends.

This case was the result of an investigation by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the FBI. The federal government has primary law enforcement jurisdiction over the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
