Minneapolis Man Sentenced for Robbing TCF Bank

U.S. Attorney’s Office October 22, 2009
  • District of Minnesota (612) 664-5600

A 42-year-old Minneapolis man was sentenced today in federal court for robbing the TCF Bank located at 1444 Lake Street on November 12, 2008. In Minneapolis, United States District Court Judge Ann Montgomery sentenced Herbert Ray Kelly to 120 months in prison and three years of supervised release on one count of bank robbery. Kelly was indicted on December 16, 2008, and pleaded guilty on April 21, 2009.

In his plea agreement, Kelly admitted stealing $3,760 from the bank. After entering the bank at approximately 10:30 a.m. on November 10, Kelly handed a teller a note that read, “I have a gun. I want all the $100, $50 and $20. Don’t call the police or I will come back for you.” Kelly left the bank on foot and hopped a Metro Transit bus headed eastbound on Lake Street.

Officers stopped the bus along Hennepin Avenue, found Kelly, and arrested him. During a search of a bag Kelly was carrying, officers discovered $3,740 in cash. The remaining $20 had been used, in part, to pay for bus fare.

This case was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Minneapolis Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Erika R. Mozangue.
