Grand Jury Returns Indictments

MADISON, WI—A federal grand jury in the Western District of Wisconsin, sitting in Madison, returned the following indictments today. You are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
DeForest Man Charged with Arson
Thomas L. Matje, 46, DeForest, Wis., is charged with arson. The indictment alleges that on December 27, 2011, he destroyed by fire a building and personal property known as Fat Boys Pizza, in Lodi, Wis.
If convicted, Matje faces a mandatory minimum penalty of five years and a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert A. Anderson.
Chippewa Falls Man Charged with Failure to Update Registration as Sex Offender
Matthew Flaskrud, 35, Chippewa Falls, Wis., is charged with failing to update his registration as required by the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). The indictment alleges that he was a person who was required to register under SORNA, and that between July 18, 2011 and September 29, 2011, he traveled from Wisconsin to Colorado and failed to update his registration.
If convicted, Flaskrud faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the U.S. Marshals Service. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert A. Anderson.
Fitchburg Man Charged with Being a Felon in Possession of Firearms and Ammunition
Juan M. Gonzalez-Ruiz, 36, Fitchburg, Wis., is charged with being a felon in possession of two firearms and ammunition. The indictment alleges that on October 19, 2011, he possessed a .357 revolver and a .38 caliber revolver, as well as ammunition.
If convicted, Gonzalez-Ruiz faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Fitchburg Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Munish Sharda.
Federal Prison Inmate Charged with Possessing Prohibited Objects
Donald W. Simms II, 34, an inmate of the Federal Correctional Institution at Oxford, Wis., is charged with two counts of possessing prohibited objects. The indictment alleges that on January 3, 2012, he possessed marijuana and a cellular telephone.
If convicted, Simms faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison on the possession of marijuana count, and one year in federal prison on the possession of a cellular telephone count. The charges against him are the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Federal Bureau of Prisons. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Rank.
Three Charged with Illegal Re-Entry Into U.S.
In unrelated cases, three citizens of Mexico are charged with illegally re-entering the United States after previously being deported. The indictments charge Reynaldo Coronado-Piedra, 33, found in Stevens Point, Wis. on June 18, 2009; Pedro Reyes-Perez, 30, found in Whitehall, Wis. on March 19, 2011; and Jaime Santoyo-Lagunas, 23, found in Mauston, Wis. on June 18, 2010.
If convicted, Coronado-Piedra and Reyes-Perez each face a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison, and Santoyo-Lagunas faces a maximum penalty of two years in federal prison. The charges against them are the result of investigations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The prosecution of these cases has been assigned to Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Leah Fillbach Lenzendorf.
