Hate Crimes Issues Summit

United States Attorney James L. Santelle announced today that a hate crimes issues summit will be held on Thursday, March 10 at Eckstein Hall of the Marquette University Law School, 1215 West Michigan Street, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Opening remarks will be made by: United States Attorney Santelle; Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett; Special-Agent in Charge Nancy McNamara of the FBI; Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn; and Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm.

Presentations will be given by Sheriff David O’Malley, who was the lead investigator of the hate crime-motivated murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming, and from Mr. Dennis Shepard, Matthew’s father, who will share his moving insights and inspirational perspectives on his son’s murder, which ultimately changed our nation. Other speakers include: Bobbi Bernstein (Deputy Chief of the Civil Rights Division for the U.S. Department of Justice), Kent Lovern (Chief Deputy District Attorney for Milwaukee County), Clare Pinkert (Midwest Area Civil Rights Counsel for the Anti-Defamation League), and a panel of victims of various types of hate crime.

The conference planning committee consisted of representatives of the following agencies: Federal Bureau of Investigation, Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, Milwaukee County DA’s Office, Milwaukee Police Department, and the United States Attorney’s Office.

The United States Attorney will be available for on-camera interviews. There will also be other opportunities available for on camera coverage of various presentations.
