Inmate Convicted of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury

U.S. Attorney’s Office August 20, 2009
  • Southern District of Florida (305) 961-9001

Jeffrey H. Sloman, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Michael J. Folmar, Acting Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Miami Field Office, announced that a federal jury in Miami found defendant Deangelo Mitchell, 36, of Miami-Dade County, guilty today of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Sentencing has been scheduled for October 28, 2009 before U.S. District Court Judge Paul C. Huck.

Mitchell was convicted of one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and one count of assault by striking, beating or wounding, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 113(a)(6) and (4). The charges arose out of an assault that occurred at the Federal Detention Center in Miami in October 2008.

According to evidence presented during trial, Mitchell attacked his cell mate on the night of October 26, 2008. The defendant strangled and choked the victim to the point of unconsciousness and repeatedly beat him about the face, head, chest and back with closed fists. The defendant had been previously convicted of manslaughter in March 2007.

Mr. Sloman commended the investigative efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Mr. Sloman also thanked the Bureau of Prisons for their cooperation in this investigation. This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kelly Karase and Michael Gilfarb.
