Robbery of Fifth Third Bank in Independence

On Thursday, June 18, 2015 at approximately 12:41 p.m., the Fifth Third Bank branch in Independence, Kentucky was robbed. The subject escaped with more than $1,000, and a pursuit ensued involving multiple local law enforcement agencies, to include the Independence and Covington Police Departments and the Kenton County Sheriff’s Department. The subject was taken into custody by the Covington Police Department.

In response to today’s developments, Special Agent in Charge Howard Marshall stated that even in this high-tech age, old-fashioned bank robberies continue to be a cause for concern. In 2014 alone, there were 3,879 bank robberies across the United States, which included 134 acts of violence, resulting in 63 injuries and 13 deaths. SAC Marshall expressed appreciation for the collaboration, cooperation, and partnership the FBI shares with state and local law enforcement partners in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He also advised that the Covington Resident Agency will continue to work closely with the Independence Police Department, Bellevue Police Department, Boone County Sheriff’s Office, and Covington Police Department, as well as other FBI field divisions to determine if today’s robbery is connected to a series of bank robberies committed by the Sock Hat Bandit in the tri-state area over the past few months.
