Former Big Sandy Inmate Convicted of Assaulting Corrections Officer

LONDON, KY—A former inmate at the United States Penitentiary (USP) Big Sandy was convicted yesterday by a federal jury of assaulting a corrections officer that resulted in bodily injury.
The evidence established that Adam Oliveri, 32, originally from the Bronx, N.Y., assaulted a corrections officer in October of 2008. The evidence also established that Oliveri stabbed the officer in the head, back, and arm with a prison-made weapon.
The jury returned the verdict after a three-day trial.
Edwin J. Walbourn III, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Warden J.C. Zuercher, USP Big Sandy; and Elizabeth Fries, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, jointly made the announcement.
The investigation was conducted by the USP Big Sandy and the FBI. The United States was represented in the trial by Assistant United States Attorneys Robert M. Duncan, Jr. and J. Thompson.
Oliveri is currently scheduled to appear for sentencing before Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove in London on August 26, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. Oliveri faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. However, his sentence will be imposed by the court after consideration of the United States Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing the imposition of sentences.
