  • Eastern District of Kentucky (859) 233-2661

COVINGTON, KY—Michael Helvey, 29, of Dayton, Ky. was sentenced today to 52 months in prison by United States District Court Judge David Bunning for bank robbery.

In the course of his guilty plea, Helvey admitted to robbing the Fifth Third Bank in Bellevue, Ky. on January 16, 2009, by passing a threatening note to a teller indicating that he had a gun. This note was prepared by Helvey’s girlfriend at the time, Mandy Turner, who conspired with him to commit the robbery.

Helvey stole approximately $4,520.00 from the bank and $350.00 was recovered from the residence of a family member of Ms. Turner. At the time of the robbery, Helvey was on probation for burglary.

The U.S. Attorney’ s office indicted Helvey and Turner in March of 2009, and both entered guilty pleas in May. Turner is scheduled for sentencing on September 4, 2009.

“We are committed to vigorously prosecuting those individuals who endanger the community and terrorize employees by robbing banks,” said Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Bracke. “The FBI and Bellevue Police Department conducted a thorough investigation and put together an outstanding case. It was their commitment to good police work that led to this success.”

Under federal law, Helvey will have to serve at least 85 percent of his prison sentence before release. He will also have to serve a three year term of supervised release after completion of his prison sentence and will have to pay $4,520.00 in restitution.

James A. Zerhusen, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky and Timothy D. Cox, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, jointly made the announcement today after Helvey was sentenced.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bellevue Police Department. The United States was represented by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony J. Bracke.
