A man wanted for three counts of attempted murder in San Bernardino County was arrested at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego last Sunday, announced Bill Lewis, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.

Alfonso Garcia, Jr., 32, was wanted for allegedly shooting three people in San Bernardino, California on June 21, 2014. The shooting wounded the victims, one of whom died as a result of his wounds following the incident. The San Bernardino District Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing the shooting to determine whether additional charges are appropriate.

On June 25, 2014, a felony warrant was issued in San Bernardino County charging Garcia with three counts of attempt murder. Once the warrant was issued, investigators with the San Bernardino Police Department determined that Garcia left the area and requested the assistance of the FBI’s Inland Regional Apprehension Team (IRAT) to locate and apprehend Garcia.

Following an investigation conducted by IRAT, investigators determined that Garcia fled the state of California to Mexico, in violation of federal law. On September 22, 2014, a federal arrest warrant was issued for Garcia in United States District Court, Central District of California, charging Garcia with Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution (UFAP).

Based on the collaborative efforts of the FBI in Los Angeles; San Diego and its Legal Attaché in Mexico City, as well as the Mexican Federal Police (PF), the fugitive was located and arrested on October 5, 2014 in Rosarito, Baja, Mexico. Garcia, a United States citizen, was deported from Mexico to the United States by the Mexican migration authorities. Garcia was turned over to the FBI and formally arrested at the San Ysidro port of entry pursuant to the UFAP warrant, and transported back to San Bernardino on October 5, 2014.

The fugitive investigation concerning Garcia was conducted by IRAT, which is made up of agents and officers with the FBI; San Bernardino Police Department; Riverside County Sheriff’s Department; and the Riverside Police Department.

Garcia is currently being held at the San Bernardino Central Jail in San Bernardino. The United States government is expected to dismiss the federal warrant harging Garcia and he will be prosecuted by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.
