A man charged with conducting a takeover bank robbery last year in Orange County was convicted last Thursday in United States District Court, announced André Birotte, Jr., the United States Attorney in Los Angeles, and Bill L. Lewis, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.

A jury in Santa Ana, California found Kenneth Lyle Spangle, 62, guilty of robbing the Bank of America located at 160 East Yorba Linda Boulevard, Placentia, in August 2012.

On the morning of August 2, 2012, Spangle entered the Placentia bank wearing layers of clothing, a ripped nylon mask over his face and a towel over his head. Additionally, Spangle was carrying a large BB gun partially covered by a pillow case. Spangle shouted at everyone, “Get down!” and ordered the victim teller, at gunpoint, to give him money out of the bottom drawer. After receiving money from the victim teller, Spangle left the bank, leaving victims and others on the ground with their hands up.

A responding officer with the Placentia Police Department quickly located Spangle running up a residential street north of the bank and was able to subdue Spangle with the help of a passing civilian. Shortly thereafter, additional officers with the Placentia Police Department arrived and Spangle was taken into custody.

Spangle was subsequently charged federally with armed bank robbery and went to trial on July 30, 2013. On August 1, 2013, the jury reached a verdict of guilty. Spangle faces a statutory maximum penalty of 25 years in federal prison when he is sentenced. Spangle is scheduled to be sentenced on November 15, 2013.
