U.S. Attorney’s Office September 02, 2009
  • District of Kansas (316) 269-6481

WICHITA, KS—Former police officer Calvin Schaffer, 44, Goddard, Kansas, has pleaded guilty to wire fraud, U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said today.

Schaffer pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in a wire fraud scheme to deprive citizens of his honest services as a member of the Goddard, Kansas Police Department. In his plea, he admitted that on Feb. 27, 2009, he arrested a woman for driving under the influence of alcohol. Later, he contacted the woman and suggested he could arrange for the charges to be dismissed if she would have sex with him. While on duty, Schaffer used police department computers to send e-mails and photographs to the woman. In the photos, he appeared partially undressed and nude. The messages traveled over the Internet through servers in California and Virginia.

Sentencing is set for Nov. 16, 2009. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. The Federal Bureau of Investigation worked on the case. Welch is prosecuting.
