FBI Indianapolis Announces Arrest in Italy

Michael S. Welch, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the Indianapolis Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), today announced the arrest of Dr. Mark S. Weinberger in Courmayeur, Italy.
On December 15, 2009, Weinberger was arrested by Italian Law Enforcement Authorities as he hid in a tent in Courmayeur, Italy.
Weinberger was an otolaryngologist who owned and operated the Nose and Sinus Center and the Merrillville Center for Advanced Surgery both located in Merrillville, Indiana. Weinberger disappeared on September 21, 2004, while on vacation in Mykonos, Greece.
In November 2004, an investigation was initiated by the FBI and the Office of Personnel Management - Office of Inspector General. On December 6, 2006, a Federal Grand Jury in the Northern District of Indiana indicted Weinberger on 22 counts of Health Care Fraud in violation of Title 18, United States Code Section 1347. On December 7, 2006, a Federal warrant was issued for his arrest.
In an effort to locate Dr. Weinberger, he was featured on the television program America’s Most Wanted on September 6, 2008 and again on August 15, 2009.
