Judge Bloch Rodwin began this initiative after observing that cultural barriers in the courtroom were making it difficult to ensure justice for the growing number of refugee, immigrant, and Muslim families that appeared before her.

The St. Louis Division honors Emerson Electric and its Ferguson Forward initiative as a sterling example of corporate citizenship. After the August 2014 shooting of Michael Brown, Emerson donated $4.4 million to invest in the young people of Ferguson. Since then, Emerson has doubled its commitment to $8.5 million and sponsored 30 education and job programs.

The Birmingham Division honors the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC), which revolutionized the country’s response to child sexual abuse and serves as a model for more than 900 Children’s Advocacy Centers now operating worldwide. The NCAC, which celebrated 30 years of service in 2015, educates thousands of people each year to recognize and support maltreated children.

The Houston Division honors K9s4Cops, a Houston-based non-profit that provides trained K9s to protect underfunded communities by reducing drug trafficking and violent crime. Since its inception in 2010, K9s4Cops has provided more than 100 K9 units to departments in 29 states. These animals help find explosives, narcotics, and weapons in some of our nation’s most at-risk communities.

The Dallas Division honors the Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County. The El Paso Division honors Marilyn Munden for working to improve the quality of life of people in her community. Ms. Munden devotes her time to several non-profit boards, through which she works to help children, the elderly, minority women, and the city at large. She has been named an outstanding leader by the Texas Commission for Women.

The Little Rock Division honors Nancy Chu for her volunteer service with Camp Aldersgate, a camp for senior adults and children with medical needs and disabilities. Her work gives them the chance to engage in camp activities they would normally not be able to take part in. Ms. Chu is also a graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy.

The Indianapolis Division honors Raio Krishnayya, founder and executive director of the Center for Victim and Human Rights, an Indianapolis-based non-profit that provides legal aid to victims of crime and human rights violations. Mr. Krishnayya works with victims of domestic violence and helps victims of human trafficking by focusing on immigration, protective orders, and family law issues.

Rosilyn Temple Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Kansas City Division honors the Kansas City chapter of Mothers in Charge, a non-profit advocacy and support group for mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and sisters who have lost children and family members to homicide. The group provides crisis counseling and other support to victims’ families, and works with law enforcement to gather tips about violent crimes.

Honolulu Division honors Roy Sakuma for his work to address the needs of his community, particularly in Hawaii’s schools. He has given of his time and talents in support of youth programs for the past 50 years and has devoted his life to teaching, mentoring, inspiring, and bringing hope to thousands of people throughout Hawaii and Japan.

The Detroit Division honors Tarence Wheeler for his community outreach efforts, his mentoring work, and his support of education in his community. In addition to serving as director of community outreach and parent engagement for the River Rouge School District, he serves on a number of boards and spends his free time organizing events to help disadvantaged people in Detroit.

The Las Vegas Division honors Alan Rogers for his dedication to youth and for building partnerships with law enforcement in northern Nevada. Mr. Rogers has helped local law enforcement implement technical solutions to combat crime. He currently serves as the program director for the InfraGard Sierra Nevada Members Alliance and as a mentor with the Boy Scouts.

The Denver Division honors the Juvenile Assessment Center for securing critical resources for victims of sex trafficking. The center provides screenings and behavioral assessments for youth facing trouble with the law, drug addiction, or other issues; works to identify high-risk victims of trafficking; and connects these young people and their families with free support services.

Dale R. Landry Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Jacksonville Division honors Dale R. Landry for promoting communication and cooperation between law enforcement and African-Americans. In 2015, Mr. Landry served as a link between the FBI and the community during an investigation into the defacement of several African-American churches in Wakulla County, Florida. His work calmed racial tensions and helped restore trust between the community and law enforcement.

Dr. Thomas Collins Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Cleveland Division honors Dr. Thomas Collins, former chief medical officer at the MetroHealth System in Cleveland, for his work with area law enforcement, emergency services, and hospital-based emergency medical personnel to prepare for potential weapons of mass destruction attacks. He also assists the Cleveland FBI SWAT team with medical training for the dangerous, unpredictable situations they often encounter.

Eddie Mannis Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Knoxville Division honors Eddie Mannis for more than 25 years of philanthropic work in the Knoxville area. Mr. Mannis founded HonorAir Knoxville, which flies veterans to Washington, D.C., where they spend the day touring the city and are honored as national heroes. To date, 19 HonorAir Knoxville flights have honored more than 2,600 veterans.

The Salt Lake City Division honors the South Salt Lake Police Athletic League (PAL) Pete Suazo Boxing Center, which provides students with the opportunity to experience boxing, receive tutoring, take part in community service, and attend workshops focused on safe communities and healthy behaviors. The community impact has been tremendous and has included a notable decrease in crime among young people in South Salt Lake.

The Portland Division honors June Vining, founder and executive director of the Trauma Intervention Program of Portland/Vancouver, Inc (TIP). The TIP is a non-profit organization of volunteers who respond to tragic situations to comfort those experiencing the darkest hours of their lives. Under Ms. Vining’s direction, the program has grown to more than 200 volunteers in 25 cities.

The Springfield Division honors Suzanne Phegley for her contributions toward the prevention of cyber crime and to youth programs in her community. Ms. Phegley helped start a cyber crimes task force and volunteers at the Team Illinois Youth Police Camp, where she provides supplies and teaches a financial education class called Money Smarts.

The Richmond Division honors Tom Bowers, Commonwealth Attorney for Salem, Virginia, for his work in organizing a heroin prevention initiative in the Roanoke area. The initiative educates the community on the staggering statistics related to prescription drug and heroin use among young people, while focusing on measures to help alleviate the damage to the community.

Alan Lai Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Seattle Division honors Alan Lai, who has been a community leader in the Seattle area for more than 30 years. Mr. Lai was the first certified court interpreter in Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese in Washington state. Today, he is nationally known for his outstanding victim advocacy work, particularly on human trafficking cases targeting minority communities.

The center provides a safe and supportive home away from home, including before- and after-school programs, summer camps, teen activities, parent empowerment activities, and volunteer opportunities for both teens and community members.

Dr. William H. Kerr, Jr. Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Pittsburgh Division honors Dr. William H. Kerr, Jr., for his work with FBI Pittsburgh’s Heroin Outreach Prevention and Education (H.O.P.E.) Initiative, a community outreach program. The division also honors Dr. Kerr for implementing its first Cyber Security STEM program. Dr. Kerr believes that an investment in education is an investment in the economic vitality of the region.

Elio Gonzalez Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The San Juan Division honors Elio Gonzalez for his efforts to keep children safe while they are navigating the Internet. As a manager at Best Buy Geek Squad, Mr. Gonzalez launched the Geek Squad Security Expo. Today, he runs the Cyber Social Ministry and gives a dozen presentations a month on Internet safety, cyber crimes, and cyber bullying.

John Ducoff Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Philadelphia Division honors Covenant House Pennsylvania for their efforts to assist the homeless youth population in Philadelphia. Covenant House is the largest provider of services to homeless, runaway, trafficked, and at-risk youth in the city. Covenant House provides stable housing, a solid educational foundation, and the skills young people need to sustain employment and succeed.

Kari Watkins Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Oklahoma City Division honors the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum for helping to prevent terrorism through education and community awareness. The Outdoor Symbolic Memorial and the indoor Memorial Museum tell the story of the Oklahoma City Bombing of April 19, 1995. Museum staff helped pass legislation requiring that history classes in Oklahoma teach students about the bombing.

Krista Heeren-Graber Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Minneapolis Division honors Krista Heeren-Graber, executive director of the South Dakota Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault. Ms. Heeren-Graber began the network as a one-person agency working out of her car, and ultimately grew it into an agency of eight employees who address the concerns of domestic violence and sexual assault victims.

Martha Peek Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Mobile Division honors Martha Peek, Mobile County Schools superintendent, for empowering youth in her community and providing resources to ensure their success. Mrs. Peek is an instrumental partner in the success of the Bridging the Gap program, a youth outreach collaboration between the FBI, the Mobile Police Department, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Omar Siddiqui Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Los Angeles Division honors Omar Siddiqui for helping to build a closer relationship between the FBI and the Muslim community it serves. Thanks to his encouragement, community members have provided much needed assistance in FBI investigations and many young adults from his mosque have participated in the Los Angeles Division’s community outreach programs.

Rabbi Abraham Friedman Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
High-resolution image The New York Division honors Rabbi Abraham Friedman for providing assistance and meals to hospital patients and their families, and for his support of law enforcement as a police chaplain. Rabbi Friedman founded Bikur Cholim Shabbos rooms at several local hospitals, ensuring that patients’ families have free hot meals available during their loved ones’ hospital stays.

Robert Asseo Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Louisville Division honors Robert Asseo for his role in improving relations between local minority communities and law enforcement. A native of Puerto Rico, Mr. Asseo is the first Hispanic citizen to serve on the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights. He also provides translation help to local law enforcement and mediates potential civil rights concerns.

Stephen B. Quirk Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Omaha Division honors Stephen B. Quirk, the chief executive officer of Youth Emergency Services and Shelter, known locally as YESS. Under Mr. Quirk’s direction, what began as a teen runaway shelter has grown into a nationally accredited organization serving 1,900 children per year. YESS is Iowa’s largest and most comprehensive emergency shelter.

Tom Hinz Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Milwaukee Division honors Tom Hinz, founder and director of the Northeast Wisconsin Veterans Treatment Court. The court has been a lifesaver for veterans coping with challenges resulting from their service, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, traumatic brain injury, alcohol and substance abuse, and domestic violence. Twenty-six veterans have graduated from the court with no incidents of recidivism.

Zulfat Suara Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Memphis Division honors Zulfat Suara for her work with Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South, Inc., which teaches students to manage finances and make good career choices. Through Junior Achievement’s BizTown program, fifth-graders get to be adults for a day in a fictional town where they work, receive a paycheck, and even elect public officials.

Carlton Ashby Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Norfolk Division honors Carlton Ashby for his leadership and commitment to youth in the Hampton Roads community. As an elementary school teacher, Mr. Ashby earned recognition including Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and the National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teachers. In retirement, he continues to help teachers with effective discipline strategies and develops mentorship programs for at-risk youth.

Dan Braccio Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The New Haven Division honors Dan Braccio, director of adult services at the Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport. Mr. Braccio oversees several programs that support men and women who are transitioning from incarceration to the Greater Bridgeport community. His compassionate and effective advocacy has made him a widely recognized leader in his community.

Dr. Derrick J. Hughes Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Miami Division honors Dr. Derrick J. Hughes for his passion in mentoring minority boys through educational, economical, and spiritually enriching activities. Dr. Hughes founded the Piney Grove Boys Academy, a kindergarten to ninth-grade school that prepares boys for success by providing them high quality academic courses, a nurturing environment, and the opportunity to explore possible career choices.

Dr. Thomas Haveron Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The Newark Division honors Dr. Thomas Haveron for his leadership of community-based youth programs that teach children to recognize and avoid criminal activity. Dr. Haveron also founded the MVP Foundation, which provides financial aid to families with children battling pediatric cancer and partners with other foundations to help terminally ill children meet their favorite athletes and celebrities.

Ethan Ashley Receives Director’s Community Leadership Award from Director Comey on April 15, 2016
The New Orleans Division honors Ethan Ashley for empowering under-served youth and advocating for youth justice, civil rights, and leadership. Mr. Ashley is a board member of Youth Run NOLA, a local non-profit that creates and empowers a community of healthy young leaders through running. He also mentors fatherless young men through the Son of a Saint Foundation.
