United States Attorney John E. Murphy announced that in Midland, 27-year-old Jerry Dewitt Smith, Jr., was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release for robbing the Security Bank in Odessa on November 6, 2009.

On the day of the robbery, Smith entered the Security Bank at 4040 East 42nd Street in Odessa, Texas, walked directly to an open teller station, pulled out a firearm, and pointed it at the teller. Smith demanded the teller provide him cash from the bank’s drawers. The teller complied, and Smith escaped with over $18,000.

On January 15, 2010, Smith pled guilty to the bank robbery and brandishing of a firearm during a crime of violence.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Texas Rangers and Odessa Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Austin Berry prosecuted the matter for the United States.
