El Paso Pet Store Owner Sentenced to Federal Prison for Interstate Travel for the Purposes of Illicit Sex with a Minor

U.S. Attorney’s Office April 15, 2010
  • Western District of Texas (210) 384-7100

United States Attorney John E. Murphy announced that in El Paso yesterday afternoon, 42-year-old Eddie Carrillo, owner of Pet World in Northeast El Paso, was sentenced to 382 months in federal prison for traveling in interstate commerce for the purpose of illicit sex.

In addition, United States District Judge Frank Montalvo ordered that Carrillo be placed under supervised release for the rest of his life after completing his prison term.

According to court records, on February 28, 2009, the defendant, a previously convicted sex offender, drove three minors—two females and a male—from Sunland Park, New Mexico, to attend a concert in El Paso during which he supplied them with alcohol. Following the concert, Carrillo dropped the male minor off at the male minor’s residence then drove the female minors to his business where he sexually assaulted one of the females.

“This child molester has been taken off of the streets of our community for a very long time. For the next 30 years he will not be able to prey upon our children or grandchildren,” stated United States Attorney John E. Murphy.

The factual basis filed in this case states that in 2006, Carrillo was convicted of indecency with a child, sexual contact in the 210th District Court, El Paso County, Texas. The factual basis also states that Carrillo was arrested and convicted by the District Attorney’s Office on charges of indecency with a child/exposure after being spotted in his vehicle outside 11 different elementary and middle schools on April 27, 2009.

“When Congress tasked the USMS as the lead investigative agency on SORNA (Sex Offender Registration Notification Act) cases, it was with great seriousness we accepted this role. There is no higher priority than to relentlessly pursue those who harm our children. The dedication to duty and protection of our communities exhibited by the Deputy Marshals in this case is an example of what a child predator will face,” stated El Paso Assistant Chief Deputy Marshal Gerardo Payan.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Marshals Service and the El Paso Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney J. Brandy Gardes prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
