A 29-year-old Ann Arbor resident was charged today with four felony counts of poisoning food or drink in a criminal complaint brought by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, announced Ann Arbor Police Chief Jim Baird. Baird was joined in the announcement by David P. Gelios, special agent in charge, FBI Detroit Division.

According to the complaint, Kyle Andrew Bessemer repeatedly visited local Ann Arbor area grocery stores, where he intentionally contaminated food in open food bars and produce sections by spraying the items with a mixture of hand sanitizer, mouse poison, and water.

Bessemer faces two counts of poisoning food, drink, medicine, and water supply. Each of those counts are felonies, punishable by up to 15 years. He also faces two counts of poisoning food, drink, medicine, and water supply, causing property damage. Each of those counts are felonies, punishable by up to 20 years.

This case is still being investigated. Additional charges are possible.
