Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies announced today the availability of a cash reward up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspect involved in the shooting of Commerce City Police Officer Kevin Lord.

Lord, an eight-year veteran of the department, sustained non-life-threatening injuries on Sunday, November 8 when he was shot during a proactive patrol. The Commerce City Police Department has an active investigation underway with the support of numerous law enforcement agencies to find the suspect, who remains at-large.

“This incomprehensible act of violence directed at a police officer who dedicated his life to protecting our community is alarming,” said Commerce City Chief of Police Troy Smith. “The suspect poses a danger to all community members and must be identified and brought to justice.”

Police are searching for a suspect (photo) described as a white male in his late 40s to early 50s, with brown hair, thin build, and wearing glasses and a black and white scarf around his neck.

“This individual is a menace to Commerce City and the surrounding area, and we want him out of our community. By attempting to murder one of our own, he has proven he is willing to kill someone with next to no provocation,” said ATF Special Agent in Charge Ken Croke. “Our hope is with the suspect’s information and the reward, someone will be able to provide his identity or whereabouts.”

Officers are still searching for the suspect’s vehicle, which is described as a late-90s model maroon Nissan Pathfinder, with possible Colorado license plate of 679UNZ or 697UNZ. The vehicle may have minor right rear bumper damage and may have damage from the shots the officer fired at the vehicle.

“The FBI has contributed to the reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the person responsible for the shooting of Officer Lord. For more than eight years, he has devoted himself to protecting residents of Commerce City. Officers who put their lives on the line to keep others safe shouldn’t have to worry about their own protection,” Thomas Ravenelle, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Denver Division said. “Police officers risk their lives every day to keep us safe, so we owe it to them to help find the individual responsible for shooting Officer Lord.”
