ADX Inmate Convicted of Assaulting Prison Employee

DENVER—Timothy Doyle Young, age 52, an inmate at the Administrative Maximum Security (ADX) institution at the Federal Correctional Complex at Florence, Colorado, was found guilty today by a jury of assault on a federal officer with a deadly or dangerous weapon. The jury trial, heard before U.S. District Judge Marcia S. Krieger, lasted just over two days. The jury deliberated for approximately 25 minutes before returning their verdict. Young is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Krieger on May 16, 2011.

Timothy Doyle Young was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 15, 2010. His trial began on January 18, 2011, and concluded today, January 20, 2011.

On November 24, 2009, at ADX, Young did intentionally forcibly assault a correctional counselor at ADX. At the time of the assault, the correctional counselor was engaged in the performance of his official duties. Specifically, the counselor asked Young to sign some paperwork. Young then produced a deadly weapon, a sharpened metal instrument, commonly referred to as a “shank.” He attempted to stab the counselor before he was subdued.

The defendant faces not more than 20 years in federal prison, and up to a $250,000 fine, plus restitution. It is up to the sentencing judge whether the sentence would run concurrent or consecutive to any other sentence he is serving.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons.
