Ohio Man Arrested for Assaulting Law Enforcement and Other Charges During Jan. 6 Capitol Breach

           WASHINGTON — An Ohio man has been arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges, including for assaulting law enforcement during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. His actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election.

           Kyle Andrew Campbell, 31, of Columbus, Ohio, is charged in a criminal complaint filed in the District of Columbia with felony offenses of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and civil disorder. In addition to the felonies, Campbell is charged with several misdemeanor offenses, including entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, act of physical violence in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly or disruptive conduct in the Capitol grounds or building, and act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or building.

           Campbell was arrested on Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, in Ohio and made his initial appearance in the Southern District of Ohio.

           According to court documents, law enforcement authorities identified a man, later determined to be Campbell, wearing a black jacket with a fur-trimmed hood among a crowd of rioters who were attempting to overwhelm police officers by breaching a police line on the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Campbell is alleged to have been seen pushing police officers in multiple instances throughout video footage collected at the Capitol.

           Court documents say that Campbell was identified in several photos and open-source video footage from January 6th outside the Capitol building, moving past snow fencing erected by U.S. Capitol Police as part of the restricted perimeter, and present near the police lines. 

           This case is being investigated by the FBI’s Washington and Cincinnati Field Offices, which identified Campbell as BOLO AFO (Be on the Lookout Assault on Federal Officer) #521 on its seeking information photos. Valuable assistance was provided by the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.

           In the 35 months since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,230 individuals have been charged in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol, including more than 440 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement, a felony. The investigation remains ongoing.
