FBI Washington Field Office Announces Katrina King as Recipient of a 2022 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award

Assistant Director in Charge David Sundberg presented Katrina King, senior community coordinator of the Empowered Communities Opioid Project, with the Washington Field Office’s FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award (DCLA) during a ceremony held at the Northern Virginia Resident Agency in Manassas, Virginia, on April 25, 2023. The award recognizes King’s work as a vocal advocate and resource for those struggling with opioid addiction and her assistance to law enforcement in combating the opioid crisis. The Empowered Communities Opioid Project is managed by the School of Nursing at George Mason University. The program helps coordinate care for those with opioid use disorders reentering the community following their release from incarceration.

“Today, we recognize Katrina King for her extraordinary contributions to helping those struggling with opioid addiction,” said Sundberg. “Through her advocacy and life experience as a person who has struggled with opioid addiction herself, she has made a genuine and lasting impact in the Northern Virginia recovery community.”

King uses her background to advocate for people with addiction and serves as a bridge between recovery communities and law enforcement in Prince William County, Virginia. Her family was one of seven profiled in “Chasing the Dragon,” an FBI documentary on opioid addiction. King frequently attends FBI-sponsored events to share her perspective and experience. Her work as a liaison has forged strong relationships between the FBI and recovery communities.

Established in 1990, the DCLA honors individuals and organizations for their efforts in combating crime, terrorism, drugs, and violence in America. Each of the FBI’s 56 field offices has an opportunity to nominate an individual or organization for consideration for the award. FBI Director Christopher Wray will host a ceremony in Washington on May 5, 2023, to recognize all DCLA recipients from around the country.
