FBI Support to the Bureau of Forensic Sciences in the Processing of Rape Kits

SAN JUAN, PR—Special Agent in Charge Douglas A. Leff, of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) San Juan Field Office, announced the support to the Puerto Rico Bureau of Forensic Sciences with the processing of “Rape Kits”.

The FBI San Juan Child Exploitation Human Trafficking Task Force is supporting the efforts of the Bureau of Forensic Sciences, the Puerto Rico Justice Department, and the Police of Puerto Rico on identifying “Rape Kits” pending examination and processing. The FBI has agreed to process a portion of these kits where an underage victim has been identified to facilitate the possible identification of subjects via the FBI Combined DNA Index System known as CODIS. CODIS contains the DNA profiles contributed by federal, state, and local participating forensic laboratories and is used to compare them with samples collected from subjects or crime scenes.

Public tips and information assist the FBI and its federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. Citizens with information on crimes against children or other federal crimes are asked to contact the FBI San Juan Field Office at 787-754-6000, or to submit tips through the FBI’s tip line available on our website at Tips.FBI.Gov.
