FBI Investigates Alleged Terrorist Threat

Special Agent in Charge Douglas A. Leff of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) San Juan Field Office made the following announcement:

Last week, the FBI began investigating an alleged ISIS terrorist threat based on information provided to a partner federal agency by an identified individual. Since that time, the FBI and its federal and commonwealth partners have been unable to verify a single detail of the threat information provided by this individual.

To date, the investigation into the threat has included dozens of interviews, review of surveillance videos, queries of confidential sources, outreach to community leaders, coordination with FBI Headquarters, review of social media, and searches of law enforcement and intelligence databases for a total of more than 1,000 hours expended by law enforcement personnel.

We consider this a significant development in casting doubt on the credibility of the original threat information and wanted to make the public aware of this.

However, because of the seriousness of the threat, we and our law enforcement partners continue to diligently pursue any and all leads and are grateful to those members of the public who continue to make us aware of suspicious activity, which is often the key to preventing an attack of this nature.

As always, the public is asked to call us with any information on suspicious activities. We can be reached at any time of the day or night at 787-754-6000 or tips.fbi.gov.
