FBI Update on Shooting Incident at Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building in Oakland

Update: June 5, 2020: The FBI is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a vehicle related to the May 29, 2020 shooting at the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building in Oakland, California.

Update: June 3, 2020: The FBI is seeking the public’s help in obtaining any photos or video related to the shooting of two Federal Protective Service officers at the Oakland Federal building on May 29 at around 9:45 p.m.

SAN FRANCISCO—The FBI San Francisco Division, the Oakland Police Department (OPD), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), continue to investigate a shooting incident that took place at the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building in Oakland on May 29, 2020. One officer was killed and another was injured. FBI agents and members of the FBI Evidence Response Team are conducting interviews, following leads, and collecting evidence as part of the ongoing investigation in conjunction with OPD investigators.

FBI agents have identified the deceased victim as Dave Patrick Underwood, born February 12, 1967. Underwood died from gunshot wounds sustained after shots were fired by an unidentified subject in a vehicle. The FBI extends our deepest condolences to the victims and their families, and requests that their privacy is respected during this difficult time.

The shooting occurred on federal property, and the victims were working on duty as contract security officers for the Department of Homeland Security Federal Protective Service (FPS). The FBI is the lead investigative agency and will continue working closely with OPD as this investigation continues.

FBI San Francisco has not yet determined a motive for this shooting. The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made yet at this time. Any information regarding this crime can be made at tips.fbi.gov. All tips can remain anonymous.

FBI San Francisco and the Oakland Police Department are investigating a shooting that occurred at the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building at 1301 Clay Street in Oakland, California. At approximately 9:45 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2020, a vehicle approached the building. An individual inside the vehicle began firing gunshots at contract security officers for the Federal Protective Service of the Department of Homeland Security. One officer was killed and another was injured. The FBI has deployed investigators and the Evidence Response Team to the crime scene. We will continue to work this investigation alongside the Oakland Police Department. We will not be commenting further at this time.
