The FBI Richmond Field Office and the King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for James Edward “Scooter” Byrd’s murder on the 8th anniversary of his death.

Byrd was shot and killed when several people entered his home during the early morning hours of August 16, 2016.  His younger brother, who was 13 at the time, was asleep down the hall, but was awoken when he heard the shots.  He would later run to a neighbor’s house to call 911.

Due to advances in technology, evidence and digital data have been re-collected and analyzed.

The FBI Richmond Field Office is helping the King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office with DNA, firearm, and cell phone analysis, as well as conducting interviews.

“As we approach the 8th Anniversary of James “Scooter” Byrd's murder, we continue to look for closure and justice for Scooter’s children, his family, and his community. Someone knows something that will help Scooter’s case. With this renewed attention and reward, we can ultimately close the case and provide justice to Scooter’s legacy and comfort to his grieving family,” King and Queen County Sheriff W.R. “Rob” Balderson said.

“The FBI Richmond Field Office hopes that this reward will bring more attention to this case and motivate people to come forward with crucial information that will allow law enforcement to hold the individual(s) responsible for Scooter Byrd’s death accountable,” Assistant Special Agent in Charge Stephen Farina said.
