Former Federal Bureau of Prisons Employee Sentenced in Federal Court for Sex Crime

BECKLEY, WV—United States Attorney Booth Goodwin announced today that United States District Judge Irene C. Berger sentenced a former Federal Bureau of Prisons employee to 14 months in federal prison for abusive sexual contact involving a ward. Richard Canterbury, 50, of Lewisburg, West Virginia pled guilty in January of 2015, admitting that in April of 2014, he touched the breasts of a female inmate at the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson while he was overseeing her work. Judge Berger also ordered that following his release from prison Canterbury will be on supervised release for five years and he must register as a sex offender.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney John File handled the prosecution.
