FBI Statement on Thursday Training Incident, Injuries

The FBI Philadelphia Field Office was holding explosives response training at SCI Phoenix for law enforcement partners when a live training device unexpectedly exploded.

Five bomb technicians were wounded: three Deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), one Trooper from the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), and one Special Agent from FBI Philadelphia.

All were taken to area hospitals for treatment; their injuries vary and some are significant, but thankfully, do not appear to be life-threatening. The FBI bomb technician was released from the hospital yesterday, September 15, 2022. The FBI Philadelphia Field Office will defer to our partners at PSP and MCSO for any further comment on their personnel. Our thoughts are with all the wounded and their families and colleagues.

Safety is always a priority of the FBI and our partners, and we take incidents like this extremely seriously. As such, this incident is under investigation by the FBI’s Inspection Division. The review process is thorough and objective and will be conducted as expeditiously as possible in coordination with PSP and MCSO.
