FBI Field Office Observes 23rd Oklahoma City Bombing Anniversary

OKLAHOMA CITY—On April 19, 2018, members of the Federal Bureau of Investigations Oklahoma City Field Office attended several remembrance ceremonies marking the 23rd anniversary of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City.

On the morning of April 19, 1995, an ex-Army soldier and security guard named Timothy McVeigh parked a rented Ryder truck in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City and proceeded to detonate a bomb. This act of homegrown terrorism claimed the innocent lives of 168 individuals, including 19 children, with several hundred more injured.

During a remembrance ceremony held at the FBI Oklahoma City Field Office, members observed a moment of silence at precisely 9:02 a.m., the moment the bomb exploded. Guest speaker, Florence Rogers, a survivor from the Oklahoma City bombing, spoke to FBI employees about her experiences on the day of the attack and her appreciation for the actions of law enforcement and first responders.

Several current members of the FBI Oklahoma City Field Office were honored for their involvement as support personnel or their actions as first responders on the day of the bombing. These employees remain dedicated members of the Bureau today.

FBI members attended a remembrance ceremony at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum alongside survivors, families of victims, first responders, and dignitaries. Speakers addressed the actions of law enforcement partners following the bombing as well outpouring of generosity and spirit by the state’s residents following the tragic events, which has since become known as the ‘Oklahoma Standard”.

The FBI and the thousands of individuals within the Bureau remains dedicated to combating and dismantling acts of terrorism both domestically and internationally. It is the number one priority of the FBI to protect the U.S. and U.S. persons and interests around the world from terrorist attacks.
