On October 5, 2019, the FBI’s Norfolk Division conducted a special agent recruiting event for women hosted by the Peninsula Council for Workforce Development. At the event, several dozen women gathered to learn about the FBI from female agents who are living their dream career.

Applying to be a Special Agent 

FBI special agents are required to adhere to strict standards of conduct and exemplify the FBI’s Core Competencies, including:

  • Collaboration

  • Flexibility/Adaptability

  • Initiative

  • Leadership

  • Organizing and Planning

  • Problem Solving/Judgment

The open-ended questions are designed to understand your background and fit with these competencies. As such, you are strongly encouraged to provide as much information as possible and use the Situation, Action, Result format to describe the situation, the actions you took, and the resulting outcomes. Independent Contract Linguists 

Do you speak Arabic, Chinese, Persian Farsi, Pashto, Somali, Chinese Mandarin-Cantonese, as well as English? Are you a U.S. citizen?

The FBI Foreign Language Program uses over 75 languages to help protect against cyber crimes, terrorism, foreign counterintelligence, corruption, kidnapping, civil rights violations and other crimes under FBI jurisdiction.  

Independent Contract Linguists provide services to our investigations while using a wide range of foreign language skills. Linguists translate documents or audio into English; provide analysis; interpret during interviews of subjects, victims, and dignitaries; and provide cultural knowledge and expertise to our FBI special agents and intelligence analysts.
