Are You Fit Enough to be an Agent?

WHAT: The FBI Norfolk Field Office is inviting members of the media to take the FBI’s Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and see if you have what it takes to be a special agent of the FBI. During this media event, Norfolk PFT Coordinators will demonstrate the official FBI fitness test and invite reporters or other participants to challenge themselves by taking the actual, timed test.

Attendees are encouraged to participate in the testing, but not required. FBI Norfolk’s leadership team will be available for on-camera interviews regarding the Bureau’s current hiring initiative and new FBI FitTest Mobile App.

Whether you are up for a challenge or just want to try it for fun (we will keep score, but we won’t judge!), we hope you will join us for this unique event to help show the community what it takes to be part of an extraordinary team that helps keep our country safe.

WHEN: Friday, August 3, 2018 9:30 a.m.

WHERE: Greenbrier Christian Academy Track (311 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, VA)

RSVP: Please RSVP to cfpullen@fbi.gov by noon on August 2, 2018.

Those participating in the challenge must complete the attached waiver and provide it to the Physical Fitness Coordinator the day of the event. If the answer to any of the medical questions is ‘yes,’ a doctor’s approval for participation is required

WHY: This year the FBI is looking to hire more than 800 new agents with unique skills and diverse backgrounds. These candidates must also be physically and mentally prepared to meet the challenges and responsibilities of the job and the standards of the Bureau. This media event is intended to expose the community to the FBI’s rigorous physical requirements for special agents, encourage aspiring candidates to apply, and feature the FBI’s new FitTest App.

About the PFT

The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is one part of the FBI’s special agent application process. It must be passed by agent candidates during the application process and while training at the FBI Academy. Current special agents are also required to pass the PFT regularly to ensure they remain physically fit.

The PFT follows a strict protocol consisting of four events in the following order, with no more than five minutes of rest between each event:

  • Maximum number of sit-ups in one minute
  • Timed 300-meter sprint
  • Maximum number of continuous push-ups (untimed)
  • Timed 1.5 mile run

A passing score requires a cumulative 12 points, with at least 1 point in each of the four events.

About the FBI’S New FitTest App

The FBI recently released a new FBI FitTest App on App Store and Google Play. This free mobile app is an informative and interactive way for aspiring agents and fitness enthusiasts to learn more about the PFT. The app provides a detailed look at how to complete each component of the test, offers instructions and video demonstrations for proper form, and provides practice and testing modes to track progress.
