MIAMI—FBI Miami is informing U.S. Citizens and Legal Permanent Residents (LPR) in South Florida who are considering traveling to Haiti that the U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel Advisory for this country.

Issued on December 1, 2022, the advisory states; “Do not travel to Haiti due to kidnapping, crime, and civil unrest. U.S. citizens should depart Haiti now in light of the current security and health situation and infrastructure challenges. U.S. citizens wishing to depart Port-au-Prince should monitor local news and only do so when considered safe.”

The FBI has seen a marked increase in the number of reported kidnappings. Compared to first three months of 2022, there is a 300% increase in the number of kidnappings reported to the FBI over the same period this year. For investigative reasons, the exact number of kidnappings will not be released.

“Recently, the FBI has seen an uptick in the number of U.S. Citizens and LPRs kidnapped while visiting Haiti,” said Supervisory Special Agent Liz Santamaria. “While we understand that there are strong ties between Haiti and South Florida, before traveling there one should consider the trauma and financial costs of being kidnapped not only to themselves but to their family and friends as well.”

Every kidnapping is unique and inherently challenging. There are no guarantees. The best option is to avoid dangerous circumstances in the first place.

FBI Miami Reitera Advertencia de Viajes a Haití Del Departamento de Estado

MIAMI—El FBI Miami les informa a los ciudadanos y residentes permanentes legales de Estados Unidos en el Sur de Florida que están pensando en viajar a Haití, que el Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos ha emitido una Advertencia de Nivel 4: No Viajar, para ese país.

Emitido el 1 de diciembre de 2022, la advertencia dice; “No viaje a Haití debido a secuestros, delitos y disturbios civiles. Los ciudadanos de Estados Unidos deberían marcharse de Haití ya en vista de la actual situación de seguridad y salud y los desafíos de infraestructura. Los ciudadanos de Estados Unidos que deseen salir de Port-au-Prince deberían de mantenerse informados de las noticias actuales e irse solamente cuando sea seguro”.

El FBI ha observado un aumento notable en el número de secuestros reportados. Comparado con los primeros tres meses del 2022, ha habido un aumento del 300% en el número de secuestros reportados al FBI en el mismo período este año. Por razones investigativas, el número exacto de secuestros no será publicado.

“Recientemente el FBI ha visto un aumento en el número de ciudadanos y residentes permanentes legales de Estados Unidos que han sido secuestrados durante sus visitas a Haití,” dijo la Supervisora Agente Especial Liz Santamaría. “Entendemos que hay vínculos fuertes entre Haití y el Sur de Florida, pero antes de viajar considere el trauma y los costos financieros de ser secuestrado, no solo para la persona sino también para su familia y sus amigos”.

Cada secuestro es único y desafiante por naturaleza. No hay garantías. La mejor opción es evitar las circunstancias peligrosas desde un comienzo.
