Young Victim’s Mother Was Murdered in Clovis, New Mexico

ABILENE, TX—FBI Dallas Acting Special Agent in Charge P. J. O’Brien and Assistant Special Agent in Charge Geoffrey M. McGuire recognized six Abilene Police Department (APD) law enforcement officers with FBI Director Certificates on Friday, September 27, 2024 for rescuing a kidnapped infant and arresting double homicide suspect.

On the evening of May 5, 2024, the officers were contacted by the FBI’s Abilene Resident Agency and were requested to assist agents with a double homicide/kidnapping suspect who was believed to be hiding at a residence in an Abilene neighborhood.

APD’s officers responded and assisted FBI special agents with establishing surveillance on the residence into the overnight hours. As additional law enforcement resources were being established to safely conduct a hostage rescue, the suspect emerged from the residence with the kidnapped infant and attempted to flee in a vehicle. At great risk to themselves, the officers converged on the suspect and placed him under arrest. The infant was rescued from the vehicle and reunited with family members.

“Abilene Police Department’s officers acted without hesitation in a decisive and professional manner. Their heroic actions resulted in the capture of a dangerous FBI subject, and the safe recovery of a kidnapped 10-month-old child,” said Dallas FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge McGuire.

The recognition took place at APD headquarters during a private ceremony for department employees and family members.

Assistant Special Agent in Charge McGuire emphasized, “Residents of Abilene should be assured that the relationship of law enforcement in this community, and across the country, protects the best interests of the American people and the safety of our neighborhoods. Congratulations to each officer for their tremendous accomplishments during this difficult and dangerous investigation, and the work you do each day to uphold your oaths of office.”

FBI Director’s Certificates were presented to recognize the exceptional service in the public interest displayed by each of the six APD officers, the certificates are signed by FBI Director Christopher A. Wray.
