FBI Cincinnati Presents Director’s Community Leadership Award to Steven Tinapple

CINCINNATI—Special Agent in Charge Angela L. Byers of the Cincinnati Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) today awarded Mr. Steven Tinapple with the 2016 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award. Mr. Tinapple currently serves as the Director of Security and Emergency Management for Battelle in Columbus, OH.

“Steve Tinapple has been a tremendous supporter of the FBI and law enforcement,” stated Special Agent in Charge Byers. “Through his position at Battelle, Steve has been instrumental in creating an important long-term partnership between the FBI and the world’s largest nonprofit research and development organization that will help us to better protect the community and the nation.”

Battelle manages some of the world’s leading laboratories and technology centers, which may be targets for sophisticated cyber-based intrusions. In cooperation with the FBI, Mr. Tinapple helped develop the Cyber Security Center based within Battelle. This partnership has assisted in the detection and identification of potential threats, while also fostering information sharing critical to protecting sensitive research and development. Battelle’s Cyber Security Center serves as a tangible example of how a strong, productive relationship between industry and the federal government can benefit the nation.

Mr. Tinapple is a 2012 FBI Citizens Academy graduate and has nominated several additional leaders from Battelle to participate in the Citizens Academy program. These relationships with Citizens Academy graduates have further strengthened the ties between Battelle and the FBI.

The Director’s Community Leadership Award was established in 1990 by the FBI to publicly recognize the achievements of individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond the call to service by making extraordinary contributions to their communities in the areas of civil rights, terrorism, cyber, drug, gang, or violence prevention and education.

FBI Director James B. Comey is scheduled to formally recognize Steven Tinapple during the Director’s Community Leadership Award ceremony at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. in April 2017. Battelle is a 501(c)(3) charitable trust founded in 1929. Headquartered in Columbus, OH, Battelle serves the national security, health and life sciences, and energy and environmental industries.
