The FBI has arrested Johnny Black on a federal warrant charging him with assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country.

Black, 32, had been sought after allegedly shooting at a New Mexico State Police Officer and a Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Deputy in two separate incidents in June 2018.

Black is an enrolled member of the Noorvik Native Community Tribe of Alaska.

Santa Ana Police Officers apprehended Black near a retail store on the pueblo Wednesday.

FBI Special Agents took custody of Black a short time later.

“The FBI worked closely with the New Mexico State Police in looking for this individual,” Acting Special Agent in Charge Maxwell Marker said. “The successful resolution of this operation is a great example of law enforcement agencies coming together to keep our communities safe.”

On July 2, 2018, a federal arrest warrant was issued by the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico after Black was charged federally with Crimes in Indian Country: Assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm.

Black is expected to have an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque on Thursday.

The public is reminded that all defendants are considered innocent unless convicted in a court of law.
