New Mexico Crusaders for Justice have received the 2022 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award for supporting families dealing with a loved one taken through gun violence.

Raul Bujanda, special agent in charge of the Albuquerque FBI Division, announced the award during a certificate presentation at the local field office on Thursday, May 11, 2023.

Each of the FBI’s 56 field offices annually selects an individual or organization to receive this award, which recognizes contributions toward crime and violence prevention, education, and awareness programs and efforts to enhance cooperation between law enforcement and all citizens.

The founders, Sally Ann Shipman, Josette Otero, and Alicia Otero, were invited to represent the organization at a ceremony on May 5, 2023, in Washington, D.C., where FBI Director Christopher A. Wray presented all the recipients with engraved crystal awards. Shipman received the award on behalf of the organization.

New Mexico Crusaders for Justice (NMCJ) is an advocacy group of more than 800 members statewide who are trying to prevent future gun violence. They are families dealing with the loss of someone they love while also working to ensure criminals are properly sentenced for their actions. Members advocate for one another and aid in navigating the legal system.

By fighting for tougher laws and punishments, the goal is to decrease deaths caused by gun violence.

Throughout 2022, NMCJ members continued to be active participants within the community through their partnerships with local law enforcement where they supported gun violence initiatives, organized community programs, and events such as National Celebration of Life Day.

NMCJ continues to strive by expanding efforts and resources throughout the state to include Albuquerque, Farmington, Ruidoso, and Las Vegas. Recognition is ongoing for their efforts and ability to turn tragedy into meaningful differences.
