Myrtle Beach Man Gets 25 Months for Pirated Movies

U.S. Attorney’s Office August 24, 2009
  • District of South Carolina (803) 929-3000

Columbia, SC—United States Attorney W. Walter Wilkins stated that Michael Lamont Chaplin, age 37, of Myrtle Beach, was sentenced in federal court for trafficking in counterfeit labels, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2318(a) and 2318(c)(3). United States District Judge Terry L. Wooten of Florence sentenced Chaplin to 25 months imprisonment and ordered him to pay restitution of $4,485.00.

Chaplin sold counterfeit DVDs from a business called S & S Fashions located at 1406 Mill Pond Road in Conway. On February 21, 2006, Conway officers responding to a burglary complaint discovered pirated movies on DVDs containing counterfeit labels. Chaplin has a prior conviction for selling DVDs containing pirated motion pictures.

The case was investigated by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney William E. Day, II, of the Florence office handled the case.
