CHICAGO—A Chicago man suspected of robbing at least five Chicago area banks has been arrested, announced Robert J. Holley, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI and Zachary T. Fardon, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

RODERICK V. BURTON, 48, of the 6700 block of South Emerald, was taken into federal custody on May 28, 2015. He was charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of bank robbery. Burton appeared Friday morning before Magistrate Geraldine Soat Brown, and he was ordered held pending his next court appearance on June 11.

Burton was charged in the complaint with robbing the TCF Bank branch located at 3570 North Elston Ave. in Chicago on Dec. 31, 2014. He was identified to law enforcement by an acquaintance following media coverage regarding the Black Cap Bandit. Burton was also identified in separate photo lineups by several employees from four of the banks that were robbed by the Black Cap Bandit. This serial bank robber earned his moniker by wearing a black cap during the string of bank robberies he is believed to have committed between September and December 2014.

If convicted of the charge filed against him, Burton faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
