An Arlington Heights, Illinois man suspected of carrying out a suburban bank robbery last week has been arrested, announced Michael. J Anderson, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI, and Zachary T. Fardon, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

John P. Stossel, 37, of the 300 block of West Tanglewood Drive, was taken into federal custody without incident yesterday. He was charged in a criminal complaint filed late last week in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of bank robbery. The complaint was unsealed after his arrest. Stoessel appeared yesterday before Magistrate Judge Jeffrey T. Gilbert and was ordered held pending his next court appearance on December 10, 2015.

Stoessel was charged in the complaint with robbing the TCF Bank branch located at 440 East Rand Road in Arlington Heights on November 9, 2015. According to the complaint, a robber entered the bank just after 10 a.m., approached a bank employee and made a threatening demand for money. The robber allegedly indicated he was armed, although no weapon was displayed. Stoessel was subsequently identified to law enforcement by the public following media coverage of the robbery.

This case was investigated in conjunction with the Arlington Heights Police Department, Palatine Police Department, Villa Park Police Department, and the Illinois Department of Corrections.

If convicted of the charge filed against him, Stoessel faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
