A man suspected of robbing at least 13 Chicago-area banks in the last few months was arrested by officers of the Cicero Police Department over the weekend and is facing federal charges in connection with one of those robberies. The arrest and charges were announced today by Robert J. Holley, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Zachary T. Fardon, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

Rodrigo Medillin, age 31, whose last known permanent address was in New Lenox, Illinois, was charged in a criminal complaint filed under seal in U.S. District Court in Chicago on August 25, 2014, with one count of bank robbery, a felony offense, in connection with the June 11, 2014 robbery of the Washington Federal Bank branch located at 2869 South Archer Avenue in Chicago. He was taken into custody Sunday evening after a brief car and foot chase involving Cicero Police officers and has remained in state custody since his arrest. He will be turned over to federal custody tomorrow morning and is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Cole at 10:30 a.m. on September 4 to be formally charged.

Medellin is suspected of carrying out at least 12 other bank robberies dating back to May 16, 2014, at locations across the Chicago metro area. The wide range of robbery locations led to the moniker “No Boundaries Bandit.” The most recent robbery attributed to the No Boundaries Bandit occurred last Thursday afternoon at a PNC Bank Branch located at 6620 Ogden Avenue in Berwyn. He is also suspected of robbing banks in Burbank, Stickney, Melrose Park, Northlake, North Riverside, and River Forest.

If convicted of the charge filed against him, Medellin faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Mr. Holley thanked the Cicero Police Department for their role in apprehending Medellin. He also expressed his appreciation to the Berwyn, Burbank, Chicago, Melrose Park, North Riverside, Northlake, and River Forest Police Departments for assistance provided during the course of the investigation.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
