FBI Chicago September 03, 2009

Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is asking for the public’s help in locating a suspected member of the Latin Saints street gang who is wanted for the September 2001 murder of a 20-year-old Chicago man in an apparent gang related incident.

FILBERTO BRAVO, age 26, whose last known address was 5029 South Elizabeth Street in Chicago, is wanted by the FBI for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution (UFAP), which is a felony offense.  BRAVO is believed to have fled the state in late 2001 after being charged in Cook County Circuit Court with First Degree Murder. The murder charge stems from BRAVO’s alleged involvement in the killing of Juan Olmedo, who was shot to death as he was riding in a vehicle in the 1300 block of West 49th Street.

According to police reports, Olmedo and a friend were driving in a car near 49th and Loomis when BRAVO and his cousin began following them, apparently believing that they were members of a rival street gang. After gang signs were exchanged, six shots were fired from BRAVO’s vehicle, with one of the rounds striking Olmedo in the head. BRAVO’s cousin, Crisino Bravo, has been arrested and charged with firing the shots that killed Olmedo. FILBERTO BRAVO was also arrested and charged in connection with the murder and was released on bond pending trial. However, he failed to appear at a scheduled court appearance and is now the subject of an international manhunt.

BRAVO is described as a Hispanic/male, 5’ 8” tall, 130 pounds, thin build, with black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo of the word “Margarita” on his left ankle. Given the nature of the charges filed against him and his extensive criminal record, BRAVO should be considered Armed and Dangerous.

This case is being investigated by the Chicago FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) which is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the Chicago Police Department, and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police.

Anyone recognizing BRAVO or having any information as to his current whereabouts is asked to call the Chicago FBI at (312) 421-6700 or any law enforcement agency.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
