Training Exercise Scheduled for Thursday

FBI Chicago August 05, 2009
  • Special Agent Garrett Croon (312) 829-1199

The Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Chicago Police Department (CPD) will be participating in a joint counter-terrorist training exercise tomorrow (Thursday) August 6th.

The exercise will take place in the waters along Chicago’s lakefront, from Navy Pier to the Shedd Aquarium. The cruise ship Odyssey will be used in the exercise, which will simulate the hijacking of a maritime vessel on the Great Lakes. Both air and marine assets of the FBI and CPD will be used during the exercise, which is scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. and conclude early in the afternoon.

The training exercise is part of ongoing efforts by the FBI and CPD to test and improve their response capabilities and coordination of investigative efforts in the event of a terrorist incident. Exercises like the one scheduled for tomorrow are designed to help insure the continued safety of both residents and visitors to the Chicago area.

Although portions of the training exercise will be visible from the shore and will be open to news organizations to witness, no special media access or narration is planned. In addition, the waters and air space immediately surrounding the exercise will be restricted to insure the public’s safety.

Additional information about the training exercise can be obtained from the Chicago FBI’s Press Office at (312) 829-1199.
